White House East Room on February 13th, honored the distinguished recipients of the Medal that is typically awarded to US nationals through its 16-year history and President Obama glorified this history with the first Indian entrant – Dr. Sen who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1998, is presently one of the most renowned and honored professor at the Thomas W Lamont University and also the professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University.
The White House citation described Dr. Sen as an economist and a philosopher while recognizing him “ for his INSIGHTS INTO THE CAUSE OF POVERTY,FAMINE AND INJUSTICE”.
“ By applying philosophical thinking to questions of policy, he has changed how standards of living are measured and increased our understanding of how to fight hunger.” – the White House citation said. Dr. Sen helped create the United Nations Human Development Index.
The National Humanities Medal, bestowed on 133 individuals since it came into existence in 1996, “ honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation’s understanding of the humanities, broadened our citizen’s engagement with the humanities , or helped preserve and expand Americans’ access to important resources in the humanities,” the White House said.
Wish Dr. Amartya Sen – the great economist-philosopher, scholar, teacher and a pious philanthropist – live a long healthy life and help improve this " SMALL-WORLD ’'.
Dr. Amartya Sen deserved to be a Mentor of the world economic forum for a co-ordinated and balanced world economy for the benefit of the whole world.
